On Saturday, Warrior Way sent three competitors to join Team Caique at the Grappling Industries tournament in Wayne, Michigan. These three competitors were responsible for SIXTEEN matches on the day and contributed to Team Caique earning 2nd place team points for the event! As a side note... Due to a glitch in the registration software for the tournament, our team points get divided by all the different affiliations in Michigan. Had our points been totaled correctly, we would've earned 1st place as a team... However, this did not detract from an awesome day of competition.
Representing Warrior Way were Devin Janke, Brent Lim, and Aleksander Rasi. Starting out the day with the first match of the tournament was purple belt Devin Janke. Competing in the nogi division (weight and absolute), Devin had a tough first match with a strong opponent. Devin was able to control his opponent on the way to a convincing win by a score of 10-2. From there, things did not get any easier for Devin as he went on to have six more matches throughout the morning and afternoon. Each match was a battle and even though he did not end up medaling, Devin showed great skill and even greater heart as he battled through the tough schedule for the day. Devin definitely showed the heart of a warrior by pushing through fatigue and exhaustion and fighting through every match until the last second.
Next up was blue belt Brent Lim. Brent has been making an impressive name for himself in the world of MMA and he decided to challenge himself by competing in the grappling event. Each of Brent's matches ended in a score of 0-0 and were decided by referee's decision. Unfortunately, Brent was unable to reach the medal podium but he gained a tremendous amount of experience and showed that he can hang with anyone on the mat as well as in the cage. This will definitely be a huge learning experience for Brent. Congratulations on your solid performance Brent.
Where Devin started us out with the first match of the day, white belt Aleksander Rasi finished up the event with the last matches of the day. Primarily a Muay Thai practitioner, Aleks decided to give Jiu Jitsu a try and entered the competition. Aleks showed great poise out there and put 100% effort into each of his matches. Doing a great job of listening to coaches and teammates during his matches, Aleks received "on the job training" during his matches and was able to fight his way to a 3rd place medal!
I want to personally congratulate Devin, Brent, and Aleks on their effort and performances of the day! The knowledge, experience, and confidence you all gained yesterday far outweigh the value of any gold medal or trophy. It was an honor to coach you gentlemen.
